Why setting the Twitter Bird free may not be the right thing for Musk

Twitter has finally changed its logo to ‘X’ and a lot of brand strategists and designers are aghast by this move by Elon Musk. Aside from the many trademark issues that X is facing, the social media website and app both are plagued with numerous branding issues and the terminology eerily still smacks of Twitter all over.

Twitter renamed as ‘X’. But Y?!?

Twitter, which has a massive brand recall, has almost 354 million daily active users. And for all of them to see X popping up suddenly is not only ruining their user experience, but also their day. People are trolling Twitter on Twitter itself.

But why would Elon Musk bring this upon himself? The move seems unprepared and hassled as it may have come in the backdrop of Meta founder, chairman & CEO Mark Zuckerberg, announcing the rival ‘Threads’. Threads became the fastest growing app with 100 million users within the first week of its launch. This came as a threat to already beleaguered Twitter. Although, the number of active users has subsided, the threat still remains.

Moreover, the name X seems to have a lot of trademark issues as is being widely reported. Elon Musk, who is already under pressure because of so many lawsuits pertaining to twitter, will have another set of lawsuits dumped on him because of these trademark issues.

The divided Internet

Elon Musk’s fans and rivals have divided the internet with some people speaking against him and some favouring him without any conditions. The media overall seems to be in anti-Musk tirade since he took over twitter and while some people are in awe of his sassy attitude. But till how long will this sassy attitude help him? Some brand strategists are still in favour of this move by Musk saying that the branding nomenclature can actually revive the sagging revenue stream of Twitter but only time can answer this question.
